Indie Game Developer Suggests Piracy Over Grey Market Keys
Independent game developer Dicehit Games has stated that players unable to afford their game should consider piracy instead of buying keys from the grey market. The company cited free review keys being resold at low prices.

Independent game developer Dicehit Games has sparked controversy with a statement suggesting that players who cannot afford their game's price should consider playing pirated versions rather than purchasing discounted activation keys from the grey market. The studio's stance stems from the observation that free review keys intended for content creators are frequently being resold at low prices on secondary markets.
The development team, consisting of only four members, explained that they lack the resources to track each individual activation key to ensure it reaches the intended reviewer. To avoid penalizing legitimate media and content creators, Dicehit Games has chosen not to proactively revoke these keys. However, the company emphasized that sales through the grey market yield no revenue for the developer.
Dicehit Games further elaborated that if a player faces a choice between playing a pirated copy or buying a key from the grey market, neither scenario generates income for the developers. The key distinction, according to the studio, is that piracy does not financially benefit the resellers and grey market operators. In contrast, grey market purchases directly funnel money to those exploiting the keys.
While the resale of a few promotional keys might be a manageable issue for large publishers, it represents a significant drain on resources for small, independent teams like Dicehit Games. These keys are intended to generate exposure and support the game's launch. When exploited by resellers, these promotional assets can inadvertently fund third-party profiteers instead of supporting the game's creators and their marketing efforts.
