HMS Networks has released its latest report on industrial network market shares, indicating that over 79% of all new factory automation nodes are now connected via industrial networks. The report highlights the significant dominance of Ethernet-based networks, which command 76% of the total market.
PROFINET remains the leading protocol with a 27% share, particularly strong in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Western Europe, and is considered essential for automotive and process automation sectors. EtherNet/IP follows with 23%, established as the standard in North America and gaining traction in Europe within the food and beverage, and consumer goods industries.
EtherCAT is a significant player with 17% of the market, favored for high-speed motion control and robotics applications such as semiconductor manufacturing equipment and machine tools. Modbus maintains a presence with 7%, often utilized in energy, infrastructure, and HVAC sectors, proving valuable for integration into existing brownfield systems.
Other relevant networks include PROFIBUS at 5%, still active in legacy process industries, and CC-Link at 2%, which holds importance in Asian markets. The report underscores the strategic value of supporting various networks as sales channels for machine builders and offers insights into current market dynamics.
