Industry expert outlines role of spray foam in commercial roofing
A report from HelloNation examines the technical application and performance of spray-applied polyurethane foam in commercial building envelopes.
HelloNation has published an analysis regarding the use of spray-applied polyurethane foam for commercial and industrial roofing applications. Roofing expert Brian Dyck explains that the material functions by expanding into a rigid, seamless surface, which eliminates the seams often found in traditional membrane or panel-based roofing systems.
Beyond providing a structural barrier, the foam acts as an insulation layer with a high R-value, potentially reducing energy consumption in larger facilities. By creating a continuous seal around flashings and roof penetrations, the system aims to minimize common water ingress points associated with mechanical fasteners.
While the upfront installation costs exceed those of standard roofing materials, experts suggest that long-term maintenance is restricted primarily to periodic topcoat applications. Proper installation remains conditional on a professional assessment of the existing substrate and structural ventilation requirements to ensure system compatibility.
