Inequality Fuels Hunger, Welthungerhilfe Reports

German aid organization Welthungerhilfe has issued a statement highlighting the rise in global inequality and its direct correlation with hunger worldwide. The organization asserts that this inequality extends beyond wealth accumulation to include the concentration of power within small elite groups.

"The latest studies show that inequality in the world is increasing extremely rapidly. This applies not only to wealth but also to the concentration of power within small elites. Inequality creates hunger," stated Dr. Till Wahnbaeck, Chairman of Welthungerhilfe. He cited India as an example, noting the presence of over a hundred billionaires alongside the largest number of people suffering from hunger globally.

Welthungerhilfe's analysis indicates that malnutrition is significantly influenced not only by stark economic differences within countries but also by the uneven distribution of social and political power. The organization identifies women, ethnic minorities, and smallholder farmers as particularly vulnerable to hunger.

The latest Welthunger Index focused on the issue of inequality, revealing that the global food system is dominated by a few transnational corporations, particularly in the seed and grain trade. War, conflicts, and climate change were reiterated as the primary drivers of hunger.

Welthungerhilfe is one of Germany's largest private aid organizations, dedicated to achieving 'Zero Hunger by 2030'. It has supported over 8,500 projects in 70 countries, operating on the principle of self-help, providing assistance from immediate disaster relief to long-term development cooperation.
