Frankfurt am Main – ING Deutschland has introduced an e-commerce payment option for its Wero service, extending its functionality beyond peer-to-peer transfers. Announced on June 3, 2026, this integration enables customers to pay online with participating merchants directly from their bank accounts.

Wero, which has been integrated into the ING app since August 2025 for real-time account-to-account transfers, now serves as an additional payment method in digital commerce. This new feature allows seamless transactions without the need for intermediate e-wallets or international payment service providers.

The service is part of the European Payments Initiative (EPI), a consortium of European banks aiming to establish a unified European payment infrastructure. Transactions are typically processed within ten seconds and adhere to European data protection and regulatory standards. Major partners such as IKEA Deutschland and Lidl Online Shop are set to adopt Wero for online purchases, with more retailers expected to follow.

ING Deutschland reports that approximately 600,000 of its customers have activated Wero for private transactions, representing a significant adoption rate. To streamline the process for new users, the bank has simplified onboarding by integrating Wero's terms into its current account agreements. Future plans include expanding Wero payments to point-of-sale terminals in physical retail stores.
