Insight Terra uses AI for environmental risk assessment
South African company Insight Terra develops AI-powered solutions utilizing satellite imagery and sensor data for assessing environmental risks in industrial and infrastructure monitoring.

Cape Town-based Insight Terra is employing artificial intelligence, satellite imagery, and connected sensor networks to help investors and operators assess environmental risks in areas where reliable data is scarce. Founded in 2021, the company focuses on converting raw data into an AI-ready format.
"Our users are engineers and data scientists responsible for critical assets like tailings storage facilities and water systems. Failures in these can result in loss of life, not just production," stated Insight Terra Co-founder and CEO Alastair Bovim. He highlighted that data quality and processing remain significant challenges in industrial AI systems.
Insight Terra's platform cleans and contextualizes large volumes of data from diverse sources, creating what it terms 'AI-ready' data. This forms the foundation for monitoring failure modes and providing real-time situational awareness, aiming to help clients proactively manage risks.
A key feature is the company's hypothesis engine, which continuously compares live data against expected behavior models defined by the client's engineers. The system flags deviations early, enabling continuous monitoring and dependable data for regulatory or insurance purposes.
Insight Terra has secured substantial funding and is expanding globally. The company operates in the mining, water, and infrastructure sectors, offering recurring service contracts. Future opportunities include using real-world data to inform insurance pricing for infrastructure assets.
