Instagram to remove content filmed with Meta smart glasses for harassment

Instagram is implementing stricter measures to combat the misuse of Meta's smart glasses for unauthorized filming and harassment. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, announced that content captured with these smart glasses and used to harass or exploit individuals will be removed from the platform.

"If a video is designed to take advantage of or harass other people," Mosseri stated in an Instagram Story, such content, akin to many "pick-up artist" videos, will be taken down. The platform aims to prevent the spread of non-consensual filming and harassment. Numerous videos exploiting these glasses have appeared on TikTok and Instagram's Reels, often featuring service workers like cashiers and fast-food employees filmed without their knowledge.

Meta has already suspended two prominent accounts that frequently posted videos of strangers, primarily women met on streets and in gyms, being filmed with the smart glasses. A Meta spokesperson confirmed these accounts violated policies by publishing harassment captured with the devices. Incidents have also included prank-like behavior, such as spraying foul-smelling spray near employees.

To further deter misuse, Meta has enhanced its smart glasses' safety features. Any attempt to disable or obscure the recording indicator light, which signals when the camera is active, will now result in the camera automatically shutting down. This measure is intended to reduce unauthorized recording and protect individual privacy.
