Intel, Broadcom CEOs: Capital, Not Chips, Will Be AI's Next Bottleneck

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) technology may soon face a significant hurdle unrelated to chip production or supply chains. Executives from Intel and Broadcom have voiced concerns that the availability and cost of capital will emerge as the primary bottleneck for AI's future growth.

Speaking at the DBS Asia Future Forward Conference in Singapore, Broadcom CEO Hock Tan indicated that cash flow and return on investment (ROI) could pose greater challenges to AI expansion than infrastructure limitations. Tech leaders are increasingly scrutinizing AI's volatility and long-term profitability.

Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan echoed these sentiments, highlighting the rising cost of capital for AI ventures and questioning companies' continued investment appetite without clear ROI. Tan stated that while capital and its cost are immediate concerns, seeing tangible returns remains crucial in the long run.

The costs associated with AI are driven by substantial investments in physical infrastructure, data processing for model training, and ongoing usage fees. These expenses have reportedly surged in recent years. Major companies like Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet are expected to collectively spend approximately $750 billion on AI-related capital expenditures this year alone.

Hock Tan noted that the industry has overcome several supply chain bottlenecks over the past two years. While he anticipates that issues like chip shortages may ease as production capacity grows, he suggests that capital-related concerns could represent a more persistent challenge for the AI sector.
