Intel CEO reveals discussions with AMD regarding potential collaboration
Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger has confirmed he initiated dialogue with AMD CEO Lisa Su to explore possible cooperation between the two chipmakers.
Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger revealed during a recent CASPA fireside chat that he has begun discussions with AMD CEO Lisa Su regarding potential areas of cooperation. This move marks a departure from Intel’s historically insular business model as the company seeks to reposition itself in a shifting semiconductor market.
Gelsinger acknowledged that past Intel leadership often operated with a culture that was reluctant to listen to client needs, which damaged key customer relationships. He emphasized that the company is now prioritizing a more service-oriented approach, specifically by expanding its custom silicon offerings and tailoring Xeon product lines to meet specific demands.
Regarding manufacturing milestones, Gelsinger confirmed that the 18A process node has entered mass production, with development of the 14A node progressing according to schedule. The company expects to release the 1.0 version of its process design kit (PDK) early next year to support foundry customers.
These strategic shifts follow a period of financial and operational pressure at Intel. By exploring partnerships with traditional rivals and focusing on foundry-style services, Gelsinger aims to recover market share and diversify Intel’s revenue streams beyond its traditional chip design business.
