Interhome: Bookings for sustainable holiday homes more than doubled in summer

Glattburg, Switzerland, July 21, 2026 – Bookings for holiday homes with sustainability features saw a more than twofold increase across key European markets between 2020 and 2025, according to new analysis from holiday home specialist Interhome. The data covers stays between June and September in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland.

This trend has significantly shifted the structure of summer bookings. The share of sustainable accommodations rose from 16.7% in 2020 to a projected 29.5% in 2025. This increase of 12.8 percentage points suggests a fundamental change in consumer demand for summer holiday rentals.

The pace and extent of this development vary by market. In 2025, Italy recorded the highest share of sustainable accommodation bookings at 40.1%, followed by Germany (36.1%) and Switzerland (35.9%). Spain (29.3%) and France (16.1%) reflect different stages of market maturity.

Among specific sustainability features, recycling saw the largest cumulative increase across all five markets during the analyzed period, with notable surges in France, Italy, and Spain. Charging stations for electric vehicles showed the strongest growth in France and Switzerland, while solar energy adoption accelerated particularly in Italy and Spain.

"Our ambition is not only to observe changes in the holiday home market but to actively shape them," said Jörg Herrmann, CEO of Interhome. "That's why we are launching this series: We want to provide regular data-based insights to support a more informed discussion about the future of sustainable holiday rentals and sustainable travel."
