Glattbrugg, Switzerland – Interhome, a specialist in holiday home rental management, has reported a significant surge in demand for sustainable properties. Between 2020 and 2025, summer bookings for sustainable holiday homes across key European markets, including Switzerland, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, more than doubled. This trend highlights a growing consumer preference for environmentally conscious travel options.
The analysis, based on Interhome's booking data for stays between June and September, reveals that the proportion of sustainable bookings within the company's summer portfolio rose from 16.7% to 29.5%. This substantial increase of 12.8 percentage points suggests a fundamental shift in the market for holiday home rentals.
While the overall trend is positive, the pace of adoption varies by country. In 2025, Italy led with the highest share of sustainable bookings at 40.1%, followed by Germany at 36.1% and Switzerland at 35.9%. Spain recorded 29.3%, while France showed 16.1%, indicating different stages of market development and consumer awareness.
Specific sustainability features also saw varying growth. Recycling facilities showed the strongest cumulative gains across all five markets. Electric vehicle charging stations saw notable progress in France and Switzerland, and solar panel installations were most visibly adopted in Italy and Spain. Interhome plans to continue tracking these trends to provide ongoing insights into the evolving sustainable holiday home market.
