Interhome: Sustainable Summer Holiday Rentals More Than Doubled in Key European Markets

Interhome, a European specialist in holiday rental management, has released new analysis revealing a significant surge in sustainable summer bookings. Data from 2020 to 2025 indicates that bookings for sustainable holiday rentals have more than doubled across key European markets, including Switzerland, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain.
The company's analysis shows that the proportion of sustainable bookings within Interhome's summer portfolio grew from 16.7% in 2020 to 29.5% in 2025. This increase of 12.8 percentage points over five years suggests a structural shift in consumer demand towards more environmentally conscious travel options.
Market-specific trends show variations in adoption. In 2025, Italy led with the highest share of sustainable bookings at 40.1%, followed by Germany (36.1%) and Switzerland (35.9%). Spain recorded 29.3% and France 16.1%, reflecting different stages of market development for sustainable accommodations.
The report identifies specific sustainability features gaining traction. Recycling showed the most significant cumulative gains across all five markets. Electric vehicle charging points saw their sharpest progress in France and Switzerland, while solar panel installations increased most notably in Italy and Spain. Jörg Herrmann, CEO of Interhome, stated the company's aim is to shape market evolution through data-driven insights.
Interhome plans to provide regular, data-backed updates on the evolving holiday rental market, assessing criteria such as renewable energy, double-glazed windows, energy-efficient heating and lighting, and water-saving fixtures.
