International Beer Day: Beer Is World's Most Popular Alcoholic Beverage

Friday, August 7, 2026, will be celebrated as International Beer Day, recognizing beer as the world's most popular alcoholic beverage. Statistics indicate that beer is the primary alcoholic choice in many regions.

Beer boasts a history spanning thousands of years. The earliest evidence of brewing comes from ancient Mesopotamia, where Sumerians produced barley beer around 10,000 BC. At that time, beer was often safer to consume than water. Later, beer played a significant role in Babylonian and Egyptian cultures, even being used as payment for labor.

During the Middle Ages, the addition of hops represented a notable advancement, impacting beer's flavor and shelf life. This development laid the groundwork for modern craft beers and the broader beer culture.

Globally, approximately 446 billion liters of alcohol are consumed annually, with beer and cider accounting for around 400 billion liters. In the United States, beer comprises about 46% of alcohol consumption, surpassing spirits and wine.
