International media test new Freelander 8 SUV in China
Chery Group held test drives in Wuhu for international media to showcase the capabilities of the upcoming Freelander 8 all-terrain vehicle.
International journalists gathered in Wuhu last month to conduct the first public test drives of the Freelander 8, an intelligent all-terrain vehicle produced by a joint venture between JLR and Chery Group. The test sessions took place on dedicated courses, covering obstacles including mud, gravel, water crossings, and steep inclines.
The vehicle features the Intelligent All-Terrain System (i-ATS), which automatically adjusts driving modes to suit terrain changes. Engineers also demonstrated the Super Intelligent Valet Parking (SIVP) feature, which is slated for limited market availability depending on local operating conditions.
The Freelander brand represents a collaboration between the two companies, with JLR managing design through a dedicated hub and Chery providing the manufacturing and R&D infrastructure. The model is scheduled for an initial launch in the UAE in the first quarter of 2027.
