Internet convinced xAI trolled OpenAI's 'Dots' launch
In response to OpenAI's new AI product 'Dots', Elon Musk's xAI has acquired the 'dot.com' domain, which now redirects to the Grok app download page.
The internet is abuzz with speculation that Elon Musk's AI company, xAI, may have trolled OpenAI's newly launched product, 'Dots'. OpenAI unveiled 'Dots' on Tuesday, an always-on AI agent characterized by a colorful, blobby avatar.
Musk's xAI now owns the domain name "dot.com." This address currently redirects to the download page for xAI's Grok chatbot application. According to domain ownership registries, the domain was transferred to xAI's ownership in July.
While it's possible xAI purchased the domain for standard reasons, such as capturing potential mistyped searches (e.g., "bot.com"), the theory gaining traction online is more humorous. The speculation suggests that Musk or his team learned of OpenAI's new product and its name, and subsequently acquired the "dot.com" domain to playfully mock OpenAI's launch.
X user @birdabo was among the first to notice the domain acquisition, and their post has since gone viral. The "dots.com" domain, a more direct match to the product name, is currently owned by a defunct company.
