The question of whether crypto can be destroyed if the internet goes down reveals a common misunderstanding of how blockchain data is stored. Even a prolonged regional internet outage will pause transactions but will not erase the blockchain, which exists on thousands of computers worldwide. The network simply resumes when connectivity is restored.
The blockchain is a database replicated across nodes; it exists in storage, not "on the internet." An outage only prevents new transactions from being broadcast and confirmed, while existing records remain intact. When the internet returns, nodes synchronize, and the network resumes exactly where it left off.
A permanent, global internet shutdown is practically impossible. However, even if it occurred, it would not lead to crypto's destruction. Every node's hard drive retains the blockchain data without connectivity. Furthermore, alternative networks exist; Bitcoin has been transmitted via satellite, shortwave radio, and mesh networks. A total global outage would devastate all digital systems, not just crypto.
For Indian crypto users, occasional connectivity disruptions do not threaten their holdings. Private keys, stored on paper or in hardware wallets, are unaffected by internet outages. Access to centralized exchanges may be disrupted, but the cryptocurrency itself remains on the blockchain.
