Intuitive, a manufacturer of robotic surgical systems, is expanding its reach in cardiac surgery with the FDA clearance of its da Vinci 5 system for specific procedures. This clearance, which includes mitral valve repair and internal mammary artery mobilization for cardiac revascularization, marks a new phase for minimally invasive cardiac interventions.
Historically, widespread adoption of robotic-assisted cardiac surgery faced challenges due to the need for extensive team training, specialized infrastructure, and standardized clinical pathways. Darla Hutton, Intuitive's Global Vice President of Cardiac Surgery, noted in a recent podcast that while the technology was ready early on, the surrounding conditions were not. Intuitive has since focused on developing comprehensive training programs and collaborating with medical communities worldwide.
The da Vinci 5 system boasts significantly increased computing power, enabling a broader range of cardiac applications beyond historically targeted procedures. This technological advancement aims to facilitate more complex surgeries with minimally invasive techniques. To date, over 140,000 robotic-assisted cardiac procedures have been performed using da Vinci systems in 51 countries, with more than 100,000 surgeons trained on the platform.
Intuitive's current focus is on supporting hospitals and care teams in establishing and sustaining robust da Vinci-assisted cardiac surgery programs. The company emphasizes that patient safety and team preparedness are paramount, alongside technological advancements, as the field increasingly embraces minimally invasive approaches for cardiac care.
