Intuitive Surgical has launched the Ion endoluminal system, a robotic platform designed for minimally invasive biopsy procedures in the peripheral lung. The system aims to expand reach and enhance precision in lung diagnostics.

The system features an ultra-thin and highly maneuverable catheter that allows navigation deep into the lung, overcoming limitations of traditional bronchoscopes. With a 3.5 mm outer diameter and a 2.0 mm working channel, the catheter can navigate through narrow and tortuous airways. Its ability to articulate 180 degrees in all directions enables access to all 18 segments of the lung.

A key aspect of the Ion system is its stability. An integrated fiber optic shape sensor monitors the catheter's position in real-time, enabling precise control and stabilization of the tip during the biopsy process. This addresses challenges associated with maintaining stability in manual techniques.

The system also includes the Ion Flexision needle, which remains flexible even in tight passages and can deliver the biopsy tool accurately into the target tissue. The 'cloud biopsy' approach, utilizing markers to systematically identify and guide subsequent biopsies to confirmed areas, is highlighted as a feature that enhances accuracy.

With the Ion system, Intuitive Surgical seeks to advance capabilities in lung disease diagnosis by providing clinicians with a more advanced tool for reaching and sampling nodules in previously hard-to-access areas of the lung.
