Intuitive updates robotic surgery portfolio with SureForm staplers

Intuitive has integrated its SureForm stapler portfolio with its da Vinci X and Xi robotic surgical systems. The technology is designed to assist surgeons by automating critical elements of the stapling process through the SmartFire platform.

SmartFire technology utilizes sensors to perform more than 1,000 measurements per second, monitoring tissue compression before and during the firing process. By making real-time adjustments, the system aims to produce a uniform staple line across varying tissue thicknesses. Additionally, the instruments feature a 120-degree cone of articulation, allowing for increased maneuverability around target tissue compared to conventional laparoscopic tools.

Internal data from Intuitive suggests that SureForm instruments reduce target tissue tension and increase successful tissue approximation rates compared to several existing stapling devices. The integration allows for full control of positioning, clamping, and firing directly from the surgeon console, intended to minimize procedural uncertainty.
