Intuitive's da Vinci 5 Surgical System Features Force Feedback Technology
Intuitive has integrated Force Feedback technology into its da Vinci 5 surgical system, allowing surgeons to feel instrument forces on tissue during procedures.

SUNNYVALE, California – August 2024 – Intuitive has introduced its da Vinci 5 surgical system, now equipped with Force Feedback technology. This advancement enables surgeons to perceive the forces exerted by instruments on tissue in real-time during operations.
The technology allows surgeons to sense tissue tension and pressure, potentially leading to gentler surgical interventions. The company reports that procedures using the dV5 system have shown up to a 43% reduction in force applied to tissue. Force Feedback is designed to complement the precision and control for which da Vinci systems are already known.
"It’s a brand-new feature," stated Todd Tourand, director of Multiport Global Product Management. "Surgeons trust da Vinci precision and control—and we believe Force Feedback technology will help accelerate their proficiency in learning key da Vinci skills."
The system utilizes sensors located near the instrument tips to measure and transmit forces to the hand controls at the surgeon's console. This provides tactile feedback that aligns with visual cues, aiming to assist in performing more delicate surgeries. Intuitive has been developing this technology for several years, culminating in its integration into the da Vinci 5 system.
