Investigators probe Amazon cargo plane crash in Miami

Federal investigators are examining why an Amazon cargo jet veered off a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday, crashing into vehicles and killing at least five people. The investigation is expected to focus on a critical moment during the landing: whether the plane touched down too late to stop safely.

Video footage of the landing appears to show the Boeing 767 remaining airborne well down the runway before touching the ground. Aviation experts suggest investigators will determine exactly where the plane landed and, if it was beyond the normal touchdown zone, why pilots did not abort the landing.

Investigators will also examine the plane's speed, braking, weather conditions, and mechanical status. The aircraft overran the runway after arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and crashed across a road used by businesses surrounding the airport. The incident resulted in five fatalities, three critical injuries, and two hospitalizations.

The crash disrupted flights at the busy airport for much of the afternoon. Amazon has stated it will cooperate with the investigation.
