Iowa American Water Highlights Role of Source Water Protection
Iowa American Water is emphasizing its commitment to safeguarding water sources and ensuring high-quality water for customers during American Water Works Association's Source Water Protection Week.
DAVENPORT, Iowa – Iowa American Water is highlighting its efforts to protect water sources and ensure the delivery of high-quality water to its customers. The company is drawing attention to the American Water Works Association's (AWWA) annual Source Water Protection Week, observed from late September to early October.
Brad Nielsen, President of Iowa American Water, stated that protecting raw water is the first step in providing safe and clean drinking water. Preventing pollution in rivers, lakes, and groundwater reduces potential risks and helps control water treatment costs.
The utility's source water protection program involves comprehensive risk assessments, stakeholder engagement, and proactive measures. These include robust monitoring systems, advanced technology and filtration processes, and collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other state and local bodies to meet or exceed water quality standards and address emerging contaminants.
Iowa American Water also prepares for and responds to harmful algal blooms, which can impact water quality. While historically uncommon in the Mississippi River, the company has identified blooms through monitoring and can adjust treatment processes quickly to maintain safe water delivery.
