The IP68 rating signifies the highest level of protection a device can achieve against dust and water. It indicates that a device is completely protected from dust ingress (class 6) and can withstand continuous immersion in water under manufacturer-specified conditions (class 8).

Class 6 dust protection means no dust particles can enter the enclosure, even in extreme conditions, which is vital for facilities like mines or factory floors. Class 8 ensures protection against continuous water submersion beyond 1 meter, though exact depth and duration limits are determined by the manufacturer. This makes the IP68 rating essential for the reliability of industrial computers, rugged tablets, and embedded systems.

The IP (Ingress Protection) code is an international standard, defined by IEC 60529, that outlines the level of protection provided by an enclosure. The first digit (6 in this case) refers to protection against solids (dust), and the second digit (8 in this case) refers to protection against liquids (water). IP68-rated devices, such as industrial PCs or vehicle-mounted computers, often utilize robust materials like aluminum or stainless steel casings and sealed connectors.

While IP68 provides a standardized benchmark, real-world performance depends on manufacturer specifications and the application environment. For instance, consumer electronics like smartphones might withstand 1.5 meters for 30 minutes, whereas industrial equipment may be designed for deeper or extended submersion. Maintenance, such as seal wear or exposure to chemicals, can degrade water resistance over time.
