Market research firm Ipsos has released an analysis examining the changing landscape of festive campaigns within the Malaysian market. The study specifically investigated how consumer attitudes and the reception of these campaigns have evolved amid the COVID-19 pandemic and its associated restrictions.

The research highlighted that while concern over COVID-19 remains high among Malaysians, it has seen a notable decline from levels recorded in mid-2020. This shift in public sentiment influences consumer engagement with and perception of festive advertising.

Ipsos identified four key shifts impacting how people engage with festive occasions. These include a re-evaluation of traditional rituals and social practices, a rise in digital ubiquity replacing physical connectivity, a pursuit of personal well-being and self-accomplishment to combat boredom, and changes in purchasing behavior and household roles due to social distancing measures.

The analysis, which reviewed advertising campaigns and social media conversations during the 2021 Chinese New Year period in Malaysia, revealed a subtle move in conversational topics from culturally rooted themes to more self-indulgent discussions and shopping-related content. Digital platforms like Facebook and Twitter played a significant role in these online conversations.

The findings underscore the necessity for brands to adapt and maintain relevance in a cluttered and dynamic media environment. Ipsos suggests that companies must understand these evolving consumer behaviors to craft impactful festive narratives that resonate with the local audience.
