Ipsos Study Ranks Top Grocery E-commerce Performers for 2025

Market research firm Ipsos announced the results of its 2025 Channel Check-In ꟾ Grocery Ecommerce Excellence Study, ranking the performance of online grocery ordering experiences. The study evaluated 15 major U.S. grocery chains and four third-party aggregators.

H-E-B received the highest overall scores for both curbside pickup and home delivery services. Among third-party providers, Shipt was recognized for its overall performance, particularly in customization and delivery experience. Within the supermarket brands, Hy-Vee led in customization and delivery experience for pickup, Kroger topped the pickup experience category, and Giant Eagle led in delivery customization.

The findings are based on a survey of 1,205 U.S. adults who have used online grocery services and evaluations from 1,762 mystery shoppers. The study indicates continued high engagement with online grocery options, with 46% of pickup users and 46% of delivery customers using services at least weekly. Repeat usage intentions remain strong, with 71% of pickup users and 73% of delivery users likely to order again.

Key factors driving customer satisfaction include time savings, ease of the ordering process, convenient pickup or delivery windows, and timely order status updates. Perceived pricing and the gap between online and in-store prices also influence customer choices. "As grocery e-commerce adoption grows, brands must invest in their digital offerings to stay competitive," stated Brad Christian, Chief Commercial Officer at Ipsos.
