An average of 9% of adults globally identify as LGBT+, according to a new 30-country survey by Ipsos Global Advisor. The findings indicate significant generational differences, with 18% of Gen Z identifying as LGBT+ compared to only 4% of Baby Boomers.

Regarding sexual orientation, 3% of adults worldwide identify as lesbian or gay, 4% as bisexual, 1% as pansexual or omnisexual, and 1% as asexual. Additionally, 1% identify as transgender, and 1% as non-binary, gender non-conforming, or gender fluid. The proportion of self-identified LGBT+ individuals varies widely by country, ranging from 15% in Brazil to 4% in Peru.

Visibility of the LGBT+ community has increased over the past two years. Globally, an average of half of adults report knowing someone who is gay or lesbian, a quarter know someone who is bisexual, and about an eighth know someone who is transgender or non-binary. Women and younger adults are more likely to report knowing LGBT+ individuals.

Support for same-sex marriage and adoption holds majority support in most countries, though has slightly softened in some Western nations since 2021. Support for protecting transgender people from employment and housing discrimination is broader than for other measures. Younger age groups and women tend to be more supportive of transgender-related measures, with significant variations across countries.
