Iran conflict spurs global electric vehicle sales growth

The United States' actions in Iran and the subsequent rise in crude oil prices have unexpectedly boosted global electric vehicle (EV) sales, according to a new report from the energy think tank Ember. Between March and August, 49 out of 56 tracked countries achieved record highs for EV sales.

Notable sales increases were recorded in New Zealand (165%), Chile (124%), and India (58%). This growth was often supported by new, pro-EV policies. In Germany, for example, where gasoline prices reached record levels in August, EVs accounted for 27.5% of total car sales, a 50% increase year-over-year.

"Fuel efficiency standards and direct policy support have increased the availability and appeal of EV models for consumers, coinciding with rising gasoline prices," stated Euan Graham, senior energy analyst at Ember.

Conversely, new EV sales in the U.S. have fallen by 30% during the first nine months of the year. This decline is attributed to U.S. administration policies, including the elimination of EV tax credits and frozen funding for charging infrastructure, leading automakers to cancel several planned EV models.

Globally, total EV sales increased by 11% year-over-year for the first eight months. Excluding U.S. and Chinese figures, the growth reached 45%. The report estimates that oil-importing nations have displaced approximately $20 billion worth of crude oil imports due to the increased adoption of EVs.
