Isar Aerospace Launches First Commercial Orbital Rocket from Europe
German company Isar Aerospace has successfully launched its Spectrum rocket into orbit from Norway, marking the first fully commercial orbital launch by a European company. The launch took place Saturday from the Andøya Spaceport.
Isar Aerospace, a German company founded in 2018, achieved a significant milestone on Saturday by successfully launching its Spectrum rocket into low-Earth orbit. The launch, which took place from the Andøya Spaceport in northern Norway, marks the first time a fully commercial orbital launch vehicle developed in Europe has reached orbit.
The two-stage Spectrum rocket, standing 28 meters tall, lifted off at 20:12 UTC. Approximately seven minutes after launch, the rocket successfully entered orbit, carrying its payload. This achievement positions Isar Aerospace as a notable player among European space launch startups aiming to increase competition in the European launch market.
The company, established by three university students, has been developing its launch capabilities with the aim of providing reliable and cost-effective access to space for commercial and institutional customers. The successful orbital insertion of the Spectrum rocket is a critical step in validating their technology and business model.
