ISC3 proposes Biocide Leasing model for sustainable chemical use

The International Sustainable Chemistry Collaborative Centre (ISC3) has developed a business model termed "Biocide Leasing" to promote the sustainable application of biocides. This model aims to shift the incentive structure for biocide suppliers, making the volume of chemical used a cost factor rather than a revenue driver. The objective is to reduce unnecessary consumption of biocides and encourage more environmentally sound practices.

Biocides are chemicals utilized across various industrial and consumer sectors to maintain hygiene standards and protect against harmful organisms. While essential for many applications, overuse can lead to environmental concerns. The Biocide Leasing model reverses this dynamic by aligning the supplier's financial interests with efficient usage; suppliers benefit when less product is needed to achieve the desired outcome.

This approach diverges from traditional sales models where higher sales volumes directly translate to increased profits. In Biocide Leasing, service providers' earnings are more closely tied to performance and achieved efficiency, rather than the sheer quantity of chemicals sold. This encourages suppliers to develop solutions that optimize biocide application and minimize waste generation.

ISC3 suggests this model offers a "triple win" scenario: benefiting suppliers through reduced costs and enhanced reputation, customers through lower chemical expenses and more efficient processes, and the environment through decreased chemical load. The organization provides further details on this initiative in a published factsheet.
