ISC3 supports start-ups in life cycle assessment
The International Sustainable Chemistry Collaborative Centre (ISC3) is providing start-ups with customized support for environmental impact assessment. US-based start-up mobius is benefiting from expert assistance to refine its methods.
The International Sustainable Chemistry Collaborative Centre (ISC3) is assisting chemistry-related start-ups with their sustainability initiatives by offering specialized support in life cycle assessment (LCA).
The US-based start-up mobius, which joined the ISC3 Global Start-up Service (GSS) in December 2018, converts food and agricultural processing waste into new ingredients for the circular economy. Mobius has received customized support from the ISC3 Innovation Hub to improve its methodologies for understanding the environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) of its products and technologies.
As part of this support, the ISC3 Innovation Hub connected mobius with LCA experts from DECHEMA e.V. These experts reviewed mobius' preliminary LCA study and provided recommendations for ecological design. Life cycle assessment is an established tool for evaluating the environmental impacts of products and processes throughout their entire lifespan.
LCA can inform decision-making during early development stages, contributing to strategic innovation control. Early identification of opportunities and risks allows for the support of sustainable resources and technologies in development. Mobius' project commenced in June 2022 and concluded in September 2022.
