Israel has taken a significant step toward enhancing consumer transparency regarding electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure in vehicles. The country's Ministry of Environmental Protection has released official measurement results for magnetic fields in passenger cars. Israel thus becomes the second nation globally, following China, to formally publish such data.
The measurements encompass dozens of vehicle models and demonstrate that magnetic field exposure can vary significantly between different vehicles, sometimes by orders of magnitude. The findings suggest that substantial differences are not primarily due to vehicle type (such as fully electric or hybrid), but rather stem from vehicle design and electrical system implementation.
The analysis revealed surprising trends: fully battery electric vehicles (BEVs) generally exhibited lower magnetic field levels, while plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) more frequently showed the highest measured values. This contrasts with a common perception that electric cars might pose higher exposure risks.
The measurements are part of a broader effort to inform consumers about vehicle safety and environmental characteristics. Israel is currently considering legislation that would formalize the disclosure of vehicle magnetic performance, placing it alongside metrics like fuel economy and emissions data.
