IT Home: Global DRAM Chip Shortage Expected to Continue

Chinese tech news outlet IT Home reported on August 28 that Changxin Technology forecasts the global shortage of DRAM chips will persist through the second half of 2026. The company cited this outlook in its interim report, highlighting ongoing concerns about macroeconomic volatility and geopolitical factors.

DRAM chips are a critical component in modern data storage, with demand rapidly increasing from both established markets like servers and PCs, and emerging sectors such as smart vehicles and wearable technology. China is a major consumer of DRAM, though the market is currently dominated by international players including Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron Technology.

The DRAM market is known for its cyclical nature. Following a deep downturn in 2023, the market began to recover in the latter half of that year, with prices starting to climb in 2024. In 2025, a surge in global demand for computing power, combined with manufacturers' production management, led to demand significantly outstripping supply and driving substantial price increases. This tight supply situation and price escalation extended into the first half of 2026.

Changxin Technology reported a significant turnaround in its financial performance. The company's net profit for the first half of 2026 reached 77.605 billion yuan, a substantial improvement from a net loss of 2.332 billion yuan in the same period last year.
