Italian Cities Collect Substantial Revenue from Speeding Fines
Several Italian cities are generating significant income through speeding fines, with Florence leading the pack. These fines impact both residents and tourists traveling in Italy.
Italian municipalities are collecting substantial sums from speeding violations, with foreign travelers being particularly affected by the fines. The top ten cities for revenue from excess speed alone gathered over 63 million euros in 2025.
Florence tops the list of cities with the highest revenue from speeding fines, collecting nearly 20 million euros annually. Bologna, Milan, and Padua follow with significant amounts. Concurrently, approximately 850 speed cameras have been temporarily taken out of service due to new, standardized regulatory requirements.
Speed limits in Italy for cars and motorcycles are typically 50 km/h within cities, 90 km/h outside urban areas, 110 km/h on expressways, and 130 km/h on motorways. Fines for exceeding these limits can be considerably higher than in Germany, with penalties starting at 175 euros for exceeding the limit by 20 km/h.
The Italian government has introduced new regulations to ensure uniform standards for speed enforcement following legal challenges. Manufacturers must now certify their equipment according to updated specifications, leading to the temporary deactivation of a large number of speed cameras.
