Italian technology journalist and academic Marco Camisani Calzolari created the first social network in history in 1995. The platform, named InternetworkCity, allowed users to have profiles and communicate. At the time, dynamic web pages did not exist, and JavaScript alerts were utilized for message delivery.
Calzolari's early work in the digital sphere included creating the first website for MTV and numerous sites for major radio networks. He also developed the first online on-demand radio station, laying groundwork for podcasts, and Livepetitions.org, a petition platform that predated Change.org.
Born in Milan in 1969, Calzolari became interested in electronics early on and worked as a programmer. He launched his first websites in 1993, coinciding with the release of the first web browsers.
Calzolari currently teaches at university and focuses on scientific dissemination. He resides in London but appears on "Striscia la Notizia," Italy's longest-running prime-time television program, to discuss digital world issues. His research into the fake follower market has also drawn attention from international publications.
