Italian Village Varenna Bans Beach Attire in Town Center, Imposes Fines

The Italian village of Varenna, located near Lake Como, is enforcing a new dress code aimed at curbing disruptive tourist behavior. Under the new regulations, beach attire, including swimwear and going shirtless, is now restricted to the lakeside beach and boats.

Individuals found violating these rules in town areas will face fines ranging from €50 to €200. Varenna's Mayor, Mauro Manzoni, stated that the quality of life for residents should not be compromised by mass tourism. The rules apply to both visitors and locals.

In addition to the dress code, Varenna is also tightening regulations for group tours. Group sizes will be limited to a maximum of 25 people, and organizers must ensure groups do not obstruct narrow streets. The use of loudspeakers by tour groups is also prohibited.

Varenna's measures follow similar actions taken by other Italian tourist destinations. Towns such as Portofino, Gallipoli, Sorrento, and the Cinque Terre have also introduced bans on inappropriate attire in non-beach areas, with potential fines reaching up to €300 in Portofino and €500 in Gallipoli.
