ivWatch, a company specializing in IV safety technology, announced on July 22, 2026, that its continuous IV site monitoring system is now available through the UK's National Health Service (NHS) Supply Chain. The inclusion on the Innovation Products pathway allows NHS Trusts across the United Kingdom to procure the technology via a streamlined and compliant route.

The ivWatch system offers continuous, non-invasive monitoring of the tissue surrounding peripheral IV insertion sites. Utilizing patented optical sensing and a predictive algorithm, it is designed to detect early signs of IV infiltration and extravasation. These complications occur when IV fluids leak into surrounding tissues, potentially causing pain, tissue damage, and delayed treatment.

By enabling earlier intervention, the technology aims to reduce the severity of patient injuries and associated healthcare costs. Maya Aquino-Guerrero, Patient Safety Champion at NHS Supply Chain, stated that early detection technologies like ivWatch are crucial for preventing harm and ensuring efficient resource use within the NHS.

Clinical evaluations have indicated that continuous monitoring systems can significantly improve patient safety and workflow efficiency. Andrew Barton, Nurse Consultant in IV Therapy and Vascular Access at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust, championed the technology's implementation. A study he oversaw found that the ivWatch system detected IV infiltration and extravasation events in 100% of cases before they were visually identified by clinicians, contributing to a reported absence of such injuries in units using the system for over two years.
