Japan EV sales surpass 100,000 units amid subsidy adjustments

Japan's annual sales of fully electric vehicles have exceeded 100,000 for the first time, supported by government incentives that are set to decrease in 2027.

7 November 2026

Official data from Japan's automotive sales associations reveals that annual registrations for fully electric vehicles (EVs) have eclipsed the 100,000 mark for the first time. Cumulative sales from January through October 2026 reached 111,876 units, confirming a significant shift in market activity driven by government subsidy programs.

The market breakdown includes 95,614 standard passenger EVs and 16,262 mini-vehicles. While current policies provided incentives of up to 1.3 million yen per vehicle, the strong sales momentum has led authorities to exhaust existing budget allocations, signaling a transition toward reduced financial support for buyers.

Starting January 1, 2027, the Japanese government will lower subsidy caps across several categories. Specifically, the maximum subsidy for standard passenger EVs will drop from 1.25 million yen to 750,000 yen. These adjustments align with Japan’s 2050 net-zero goals, which include a mandate to phase out the sale of new internal combustion engine passenger vehicles by 2035.
