While investor focus has largely been on semiconductor manufacturers, Japanese firms Toto, Nittobo, and Ajinomoto have emerged as surprising beneficiaries of the artificial intelligence surge. Known for their high-end toilets, textiles, and seasoning, these companies have seen their stock prices increase by 78%, 63%, and 61% respectively this year.

This growth is attributed to the companies leveraging their core technologies and products to support the AI supply chain. Toto manufactures ceramic electrostatic chucks used in semiconductor fabrication equipment. Nittobo supplies advanced glass fiber utilized in semiconductor package substrates. Ajinomoto produces an insulating material for semiconductor packaging, crucial for high-performance computing and data center servers.

All three companies reported substantial growth in their semiconductor-related businesses for the fiscal years ending March 31, highlighting the impact of the AI boom. For Toto, increased demand for its ceramic components driven by IoT, digital transformation, AI, and data centers has significantly boosted profitability, offsetting a decline in its core housing equipment sector.

Looking ahead, these companies aim for balanced growth. Toto plans to continue developing both its core business and its advanced ceramics segment, viewing the housing equipment sector as a stable financial foundation. Nittobo, meanwhile, identifies electronic materials as a primary growth driver, directing significant resources and R&D towards meeting the demand from AI semiconductors. While not chip producers themselves, these firms play a vital role in the broader AI ecosystem.
