Japan's Robotics Industry Sees Strong Growth Fueled by AI and Investment

Japan's robotics industry is demonstrating robust growth, with the nation currently producing 38% of the world's robots. This expansion is significantly influenced by the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and substantial domestic and international investments. In the first quarter of 2025, robotics order values reached a record JPY 324.5 billion, marking a 14.2% increase year-over-year.

The automotive sector, in particular, has ramped up its adoption of AI-integrated industrial robots. In 2024, the sector installed approximately 13,000 new AI-equipped industrial robots, an 11% rise from the previous year. Data from the Japan Robot Association indicates seven consecutive quarters of growth in both order volume and value for robots.

Exports are a major driver of this expansion. In the first quarter of 2026, export value climbed 35.4% year-on-year to JPY 199.8 billion, with export volume rising 29.3% to 44,630 units. This highlights that a substantial portion of Japan's robot production is destined for international markets, reinforcing its position as a global manufacturing powerhouse.

Technological advancements and scalability are supported by Japan's demographic pressures, deep engineering expertise, and significant government capital commitments. These factors foster an environment where robotics is simultaneously being tested, refined, and scaled for widespread adoption.

In the first quarter of 2025, robotics orders hit a record JPY 324.5 billion, a 14.2% increase compared to the previous year. The five largest Japanese robotics manufacturers collectively account for over 40% of global industrial robot shipments.
