Jasper Pääkkönen Launched Helsinki's Löyly Sauna Emphasizing Public Access and Sustainability

Actor Jasper Pääkkönen has established Löyly, an award-winning public sauna located in Helsinki's Hernesaari district, which opened in 2016. Pääkkönen's objective was to revive the public sauna culture in a city that once boasted over a hundred such establishments. Löyly offers a wood-heated sauna with year-round direct access to the sea, blending architectural design with natural surroundings.

The architecture of Löyly was designed by Avanto Architects and has garnered international recognition. The project was initially a passion endeavor for Pääkkönen and his business partner, Antero Vartia, facing skepticism early on. A bank loan facilitated its realization, and in 2018, Time Magazine recognized Löyly among its World's 100 Greatest Places.

The establishment is also a pioneer in sustainable construction. Löyly is the first building in Finland and the second in the Nordic region to be certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Its wooden structure was intentionally designed to weather and integrate with the surrounding natural landscape.

Pääkkönen is also known for his environmental advocacy. The most popular dish at Löyly's restaurant, salmon soup, is made with sustainably farmed rainbow trout, with 50 cents from each serving donated to the WWF to aid in restoring endangered fish populations. Pääkkönen has also launched Aitosauna.com, a venture focused on exporting high-quality Finnish sauna experiences globally, partly as a response to the commercialization of wellness and celebrity involvement in sauna culture.
