JCP&L Upgrades Reduce Outages and Speed Restoration in Somerset County

Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) has improved its electric system's reliability in Somerset County through more than $3 million in recent investments. These upgrades have resulted in up to a 50% reduction in power outages and restoration times that are up to 62% faster for customers in Bedminster, Bernards, and Bernardsville.

The work focused on strengthening the electric infrastructure in areas previously prone to frequent outages, particularly in The Hills neighborhood of Bedminster and Bernards, which features steep terrain. Improvements include upgraded underground and overhead power lines, enhanced tree trimming to prevent damage, and automation that quickly isolates faults and restores power to most customers.

In Bernardsville, where older lines along railroad tracks were damaged by a tornado, upgrades have led to a 32% decrease in outages and 62% faster restoration. The rebuilt lines are stronger and located in more accessible areas, allowing crews to reach and repair problems more efficiently.

These Somerset County initiatives are part of JCP&L's broader strategy to deliver more reliable service across New Jersey. The company is making substantial investments in infrastructure and technology, with further planned investments to bolster its distribution system and customer experience as part of FirstEnergy's larger capital improvement program.
