JEDEC Solid State Technology Association released JESD264 on October 1, establishing industry-wide requirements for silicon photonics (SiPh) device certification and reliability. This marks the first unified specification for certification and reliability practices across the SiPh sector.

Previously, the silicon photonics field lacked a standardized, industry-wide framework for reliability ownership and verification, leading to uncertainty throughout the supply chain. JESD264 establishes common benchmarks for testing and manufacturing controls, intended to mitigate deployment risks.

The standard accommodates complex photonic chipsets, including lasers, modulators, and photodiodes, and clarifies reliability responsibilities among foundries, outsourced assembly and test facilities, and system developers. This aims to enhance consistency within the entire SiPh ecosystem.

Mian Quddus, JEDEC Board Chairman, stated that the standard provides the necessary reliability foundation for the broader application of SiPh technology, driven by increasing demands in AI, cloud computing, and high-speed communications. He added that it will accelerate innovation and strengthen industry-wide coordination.
