Jharkhand Draft AI Policy Proposes $130 Million Investment Over 5 Years
The Jharkhand government has unveiled a draft Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy for 2026-2031. The framework aims to incentivize AI use in governance, agriculture, healthcare, and mineral resource administration.

The Jharkhand government has introduced a draft Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy, 2026-2031, aiming to integrate AI technologies across key sectors. The policy intends to shift the state towards anticipatory governance by leveraging AI for welfare analytics, fraud detection, mine monitoring, disease surveillance, agricultural intelligence, and grievance redressal.
The proposed framework includes a significant financial commitment, with an outlay of Rs 1,150 crore (approximately $130 million) earmarked for implementation over the next five years. This funding is intended for AI infrastructure, research and development, and support for startups. The move occurs as India's central government reportedly considers whether specific legislation is needed to regulate AI.
Key proposals outlined in the draft policy focus on several areas. In governance, an AI-enabled dashboard is planned to enhance data aggregation and provide predictive insights. For agriculture, AI tools are envisioned for crop disease detection, yield prediction, and optimized irrigation. The healthcare sector will see AI applications for early disease screening and resource management, while education aims to adopt AI for personalized learning and teacher assistance.
Furthermore, the policy addresses the mining and industrial sectors by incentivizing AI for exploration, maintenance, and safety monitoring, alongside environmental applications for land use analysis and disaster risk modeling. To facilitate these initiatives, Jharkhand plans to establish a State AI Mission for strategic planning and coordination, and develop a shared AI Cloud infrastructure to provide essential computing resources for government departments.
