Jio Platforms Files for India's Largest IPO

Jio Platforms, the digital arm of Reliance Industries, has submitted its Red Herring Prospectus (RHP) to the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), gearing up for a significant listing on the Indian stock exchange. The company aims to raise ₹30,213 crore (approximately $3.6 billion), potentially marking India's largest Initial Public Offering (IPO) to date.

The public issue, which opens for subscription on October 21 and closes on October 23, consists entirely of a fresh issue of 27 crore equity shares. Jio Platforms has set a price band of ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 per share, valuing the digital giant at ₹10.3 lakh crore (approximately $1.2 trillion). Of the total proceeds, ₹27,500 crore is earmarked for debt repayment, with the remaining ₹2,713 crore allocated for corporate purposes, growth, capital expenditure, working capital, and marketing.

The company enters the public market with robust financial performance. For the first quarter of Fiscal Year 2027 (Q1 FY27), Jio Platforms reported operating revenues of ₹39,173 crore, an 11.8% year-on-year increase. Net profit saw a 9.2% jump to ₹7,764 crore, while EBITDA improved by 15.1% to ₹20,865 crore.

Key strengths supporting Jio's IPO include its extensive subscriber base, nationwide 5G network, and consistent financial growth. Further diversification into AI, data centers, and SaaS could unlock new revenue streams. While the record size of the offering and backing from Reliance Industries are expected to drive demand, potential investors might scrutinize the high valuation. Factors such as plateauing wireless subscriber growth and significant capital expenditures for network upgrades could pose challenges to future margins and cash flows.
