Jio Targets September 2027 For Satellite Network Test Launch

Reliance Jio, India's telecom giant, is targeting September 2027 for a test launch of its proposed 1,600-satellite low Earth orbit (LEO) constellation. This step intensifies the company's engagement in satellite broadband.
The test launch will involve placing a few satellites in orbit to evaluate the network's hardware, software, and other technologies before mass deployment begins in early 2028. Jio plans to deploy approximately 400-450 satellites by 2030 and complete the constellation by 2035. The company has applied to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for the necessary orbital resources.
An initial deployment of 90-100 satellites for minimum coverage is expected two to three quarters after the test launch, potentially enabling satellite connectivity in India by 2028. Jio is also considering developing its own satellite capabilities, possibly in collaboration with global operators, and building ground stations to support future satellites.
The network will initially focus on India, particularly underserved regions, before considering a global expansion. High-throughput satellites are intended to provide broadband connectivity to areas where terrestrial networks are difficult to deploy. Jio's satellites are expected to operate at an altitude of around 650 kilometers, offering a throughput of 100-150 Gbps per satellite. Once fully deployed, the network could offer an aggregate capacity of up to 4.8 Tbps over India.
