JioStar Launches AI-Generated Micro-Drama, Integrates ChatGPT into JioHotstar Search
Reliance Industries Limited's JioStar has unveiled its first fully AI-generated micro-drama and integrated ChatGPT into JioHotstar's search capabilities, as detailed in the company's Q1 FY2027 earnings report.

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) subsidiary JioStar has launched its first fully AI-generated micro-drama, titled "Game On: 4,000 Crore Empire." The content is now available on the company's micro-content platform, Tadka. This marks a significant advancement in AI-driven content scalability, announced during the company's fiscal year 2027 first-quarter earnings call.
Ishan Chatterjee, CEO of Sports at JioStar, highlighted the use of JAMS, the company's in-house artificial intelligence content studio, for producing the micro-drama. "This will allow us to launch much more high-quality content at scale across our short-form content," Chatterjee stated during the earnings call. The initiative is part of a broader AI push that also includes a revamped search feature on the JioHotstar streaming app.
The company has integrated OpenAI's ChatGPT into JioHotstar’s search functionality. This upgrade allows users to search for content by speaking queries in natural language, including local Indian languages, rather than typing keywords. These voice queries are then routed to ChatGPT for interpretation and response.
The Tadka platform, launched around the time of the Indian Premier League, has seen rapid adoption, reaching over 100 million users within two months. JioHotstar reported a 15% year-on-year increase in monthly active users, reaching 530 million. These figures underscore the extensive reach and user engagement across JioStar's platforms.
JioStar's AI strategy involves leveraging foreign models, including integrations with OpenAI's ChatGPT and previously disclosed partnerships with Google Gemini. The development also raises questions regarding compliance with India's new regulations on synthetically generated content, specifically concerning the labeling of AI-produced material and the handling of user voice data by third-party providers.
