Job Seekers Edit Resumes to Appear Younger, Many Using AI
Nearly half of job seekers are altering their resumes and LinkedIn profiles to appear younger, with many employing AI tools for these changes, according to a Use.AI survey.

A significant portion of job seekers are strategically modifying their resumes and LinkedIn profiles to conceal their age and appear younger, a practice often facilitated by artificial intelligence. A survey conducted by AI platform Use.AI found that 42% of users who applied for jobs in the past year had removed or altered details such as graduation years, early employment history, or senior titles.
The trend appears more pronounced among women, with 53% of women aged 45 and older reporting such changes compared to 35% of men in the same age bracket. These actions stem from a perceived fear of ageism in the hiring process, with respondents citing both human recruiters and AI screening tools as potential sources of discrimination.
Amidst these concerns, a substantial majority of those making edits—72%—utilized AI to perform the modifications. This widespread adoption of AI for résumé enhancement, while potentially effective, highlights the growing role of technology in job applications. It's worth noting that the survey's respondents are already users of an AI platform, which might influence their AI usage rates.
The strategy appears to yield results for many, as 43% reported receiving more interviews after editing their profiles, versus only 10% who received fewer. These findings echo broader concerns about age discrimination in the workplace, where older workers often face stereotypes regarding technological proficiency and adaptability, as indicated by research from organizations like AARP.
