Joensuu Adopts Scania Gas Buses, Passenger Satisfaction Rises

Joensuu, a city in Northern Karelia, Finland, has significantly enhanced its public transportation quality and passenger satisfaction with the introduction of 15 new Scania Fencer gas buses. These buses, operated by Savonlinja Oy, began service in June 2025 on routes within Joensuu and its surrounding municipalities.

The local public transport system, known as JOJO, has achieved record passenger numbers. Timo Lappi, the city's public transport planner, notes that the decline in negative feedback indicates passenger contentment, contrasting with earlier comments about the condition of the fleet.

The Scania Fencer buses utilize locally produced biogas derived from organic waste collected by waste management companies. This local fuel source substantially reduces the city's carbon dioxide emissions, supporting Joensuu's goals for carbon neutrality. JOJO also incorporates electric buses and HVO fuel, contributing to a circular economy approach.

Joensuu aims to increase its population and solidify its position among Finland's largest cities. The adoption of new, environmentally friendly buses aligns with the city's growth strategy and commitment to sustainable development. While Lappi expresses satisfaction with the new fleet, future fuel choices will be determined through upcoming tender processes.
