Johanniter Expands Cold Weather Shelter Services in Berlin

Johanniter Unfall Hilfe is expanding its cold weather assistance programs in Berlin to address a rise in demand for support among homeless individuals. The organization, which has been involved in cold weather aid for nearly 15 years, is increasing its services for the upcoming cold season.

Amidst a growing homeless population in Berlin, the "Nachthafen am Kotti" (Night Haven Kottbusser Tor) was launched in January 2026 as a night-time warming café. Early operations show significant need, with approximately 3,000 guest contacts in February alone, serving up to 100 different individuals per night. This new central service, primarily targeting individuals with addiction issues, operates daily from 10:30 PM to 6:30 AM, providing a protected space, meals, and initial counseling.

The longest-standing cold weather facility is "Café Krause," operated in cooperation with St. Thomas Church in Kreuzberg for 14 years. Another established offering is "Ort der Wärme" (Place of Warmth) at the Humboldt Forum, opening for its fifth season in November. This location provides a safe daytime refuge, meals, drinks, advice, and inclusive cultural activities.

Johanniter emphasizes the crucial role of volunteers, with around 150 actively engaged in cold weather support. Jörge Bellin, head of homeless services for Johanniter in Berlin, notes a continuous increase in individuals seeking help, with more complex issues. The organization is also appealing for donations of winter clothing and hygiene items.
