Johanniter files for restructuring of Geesthacht hospital facilities

Johanniter-Krankenhaus Geesthacht and its associated geriatric clinic and senior care center have filed for insolvency proceedings under self-administration. Additionally, the medical center (MVZ) attached to the facility has filed for standard insolvency. The company stated that all patient care and business operations will continue without interruption, and staff salaries are secured through November via government-backed insolvency funding.

Management cited years of chronic underfunding and increasing regulatory demands as the primary drivers of the facility's insolvency. Despite previous cost-cutting measures, the location has incurred millions in losses. The hospital has struggled to cover high fixed costs for emergency and obstetric services through current patient reimbursement rates, while the persistent shortage of healthcare staff has forced reliance on expensive temporary workers to maintain 24/7 coverage.

CEO Matthias Becker emphasized that the insolvency process provides an opportunity to restructure the facility despite its financial distress. The organization is currently in talks with local government representatives in Geesthacht to secure the hospital’s future and preserve as many specialist departments as possible. Should negotiations with public authorities fail, Johanniter plans to seek an external investor to take over the facility.

The restructuring move reflects broader structural challenges within the German hospital sector, where many institutions face financial collapse due to outdated funding models and high operational expenses. Johanniter aims to finalize a viable solution for the Geesthacht site by the end of the year.
